We work in innovative ways to promote and raise awareness of health issues which disproportionately affect diverse communities. On such occasion we (BHI) recruited our cyclists ‘BHI City Riderz’ partnered up with Cycle of Life and cycled at the Leeds Sky Ride to raise awareness of the fact that 1-4 Black African/Black African Caribbean and Dual Heritage men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer as opposed to 1-8 White Indigenous population.
Raising awareness of signs and symptoms of Prostate Cancer amongst the target group has been part of BHI’s national programme BME Cancer Voice for several years with part funding from Prostate Cancer UK. Focus groups /seminars and conferences have taken place across England using effective community engaging which dismisses the term ‘Hard to reach’. Personal testimonies evidences and combats cultural beliefs that once diagnose the prognosis is death.
BHI becomes successful in highlighting a local issues.
We are the local lead in Yorkshire for the national programme ‘Hear Me Now’ which gives evidence of the disproportionate prevalence of Prostate Cancer amongst Black African/Black African Caribbean and Dual Heritage men.
Within Leeds the make of the group consisted of 3 x Clinical Commission Groups, Men’s Health Forum (Chair Prof Alan White), NHS England, BME Cancer Voice Champions, Janseen, Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK and other members.
BHI developed an innovative programme to encourage men to take interest and invest in their health named ‘Men’s MOT’ . The concept was to hold a satellite clinical outreach programme within a community based setting. This was a success as it was in a familiar and safe environment for the men to meet, social whilst receiving accurate factual information and basic health check e.g. Blood Testing etc. The launch of the programme was covered by BBC Look North and the local press.
